Retrocalcaneal Bursitis
OVERVIEW
- Caused by inflammation of the bursa between the calcaneus and the Achilles tendon, where it is compressed by these structures during ankle dorsiflexion
- Bursa can become inflamed, hypertrophied, and adherent to the Achilles tendon, which can lead to degenerative changes within the tendon
- Frequent in athletes training with uphill running
- MRI or Ultrasound can identify fluid within the retrocalcaneal bursa
